Paraguay Seizes 22kg of Gold Intended for Panama

The National Police of Paraguay seized this Saturday at the country's main airport 22 kilos of gold bars valued at three million dollars, which were being transferred to Panama, and detained three alleged suspects, including an official from the terminal, an official source reported. "We proceeded to the detention of the people involved, one public official and two private individuals, and the seizure of 22 kilos, approximately, of the precious metal," said the head of the National Police's Organized Crime Department, Commissioner Luis López, to ABC Cardinal radio. The detainees are of Paraguayan nationality, according to media. The operation was carried out in the early hours of this Saturday at the Silvio Pettirossi airport, in the city of Luque, which serves Asunción, in coordination with the National Directorate of Civil Aviation (DINAC) and the Attorney General's Office, and was the result of a two-month investigation process, explained the police chief. The calculated value of the seized gold is three million dollars on the national market, he added. The detained official was one of the heads of security at the terminal, whose role was to prevent the cargo from passing through controls and scanners, López indicated. The other two received the bars in the international boarding area, where they were detained. The Police also seized 11,000 dollars and electronic equipment during the operation. López added that the investigation continues due to suspicion that similar operations were carried out before at the airport.
