The head of state of Paraguay, Santiago Peña, announced that during his presidency of Mercosur, he intends to promote the trade agreements that the South American bloc is negotiating, which also includes Argentina, Brazil, and Uruguay, and to which Bolivia is in the final stage of accession.
The summit in Foz de Iguazú was attended by the presidents of Brazil, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva; Argentina, Javier Milei; Paraguay, Santiago Peña; Uruguay, Yamandú Orsi; and Panama's José Raúl Mulino, as an associated country.
This Saturday, Brazil handed over the semesterly presidency of Mercosur to Paraguay, concluding the summit of the South American bloc in the border city of Foz de Iguazú.
One of those agreements, with the European Union, is expected to be signed next January in Paraguay, after the Europeans postponed the signing, which was scheduled for this Saturday, due to internal disagreements.
Peña also wishes to promote specific regional integration projects, especially a waterway and the land integration corridor that will connect Brazil with the Pacific Ocean.
The summit concluded without the publication of a joint declaration or new statements following the leaders' speeches, which were disseminated by their respective presidential offices.
