Paraguay reports outbreak of new influenza subclade

The Ministry of Public Health and Social Welfare of Paraguay issued an epidemiological alert after confirming an outbreak of influenza A H3N2 subclade K in travelers, according to the Argentine News Agency. The report noted that this finding increases the risk of contagion outside the winter season, when respiratory viruses typically circulate. Although the presence of subclade K led to an increase in consultations for respiratory conditions, authorities clarified that there has been no significant rise in hospitalizations or admissions to intensive care units. The health ministry recommended maintaining preventive practices to reduce transmission: frequent handwashing physical distancing covering the mouth when coughing or sneezing wearing a mask in the presence of respiratory symptoms seeking medical advice and resting as indicated. The Ministry recalled that those who received the influenza vaccine during the pre-winter 2025 campaign are protected until the start of the 2026 vaccination period. The A H3N2 subclade K variant had previously been detected in countries of the region, including Peru, Mexico, Costa Rica, Brazil, and Chile.
