Paraguayan sugarcane growers mobilized in different parts of the country demanding the rejection of the partial veto to the amendments to law 5444/15. They explained that the elimination of sanctions for companies that violate the regulations harms the sugarcane production sector.
"The lack of sanctions for anyone leads to speculation and non-compliance. We are not asking for unreasonable things; we are claiming the market share that corresponds to sugarcane ethanol. We do not disagree with purchasing ethanol derived from other sources like corn; what we demand is that the law be upheld, and those who do not comply should face sanctions because, with a law without sanctions, no one is afraid, and in Paraguay, we know how things are," said Otilio Gómez.
In an interview with La Nación/Nación Media, Gómez explained that the mobilizations on Thursday, October 24, reflected the discontent towards the Executive Power's veto regarding the amendments introduced to the law. These amendments included fines of 20% of the business volume for those purchasing corn ethanol during the sugarcane harvest.
