The Supreme Court of Paraguay rejected the appeal filed by the defense of former Senator Edgardo Kueider and his then-secretary Iara Guinsel, thereby confirming that the case will go to trial in April 2026. According to Noticias Argentinas agency, the High Court ruled that the appeal did not meet the requirement of objective challengability after lawyers Marcelo Bogado and Carlos Arévalo attempted to have the accusation by the Public Prosecutor's Office of Paraguay reviewed and requested the definitive dismissal of the accused. Ministers María Carolina Llanes Ocampos, Manuel Dejesús Ramírez Candi and Luis María Benítez Riera argued that the defense was trying to use a legal figure that does not exist and confirmed the judicial process. They also warned that allowing the appeal could lead to an abusive use of procedural tools. The request had been rejected by Judge Humberto Otazú of the Court of Appeals in Economic Crimes and also confirmed by the First Chamber of the Court of Appeals specialized in organized crime. Twelve months after being detained with over 200 thousand undeclared dollars at the Friendship Bridge, located at the triple border, the former senator from Entre Ríos will be put on trial for currency smuggling in Paraguay. Kueider was detained in the early hours of December 4, 2024, after agents from the National Revenue Directorate found a little over 211 thousand dollars, 640 thousand guaraníes, and nearly 4 million pesos distributed among bags and compartments in the Chevrolet Trailblazer he was traveling in from Foz do Iguazú to Ciudad del Este.
