The government of Paraguay reiterated this Wednesday its support for Panama as the host of the 56th General Assembly of the Organization of American States (OAS), to be held from June 22 to 24 in the capital of that country. In a joint communiqué, signed by the foreign ministers of Paraguay, Rubén Ramírez, and of Panama, Javier Martínez-Acha, the agreements reached during the working visit of the Central American diplomat to the South American nation are reported. The text highlights that the head of Paraguayan foreign relations confirmed to his counterpart “the firm support” of his country for the unanimous decision made within the OAS in late July of last year, which established that Panama City will host the regular session of the body for 2026. Likewise, the document states that the countries emphasized the need to “decisively advance in bilateral economic complementation with initiatives that favor the facilitation of trade.” In this regard, the ministers highlighted that Panama is a “strategic platform for commercial exchange” and a regional logistics and connectivity center, so they expressed their willingness to foster closer ties between the public and private companies of both countries. On the other hand, the diplomats reiterated their “firm and irrevocable commitment in the fight against transnational organized crime,” while emphasizing the importance of “intensifying bilateral cooperation” on this matter. Javier Martínez-Acha will have a busy schedule of meetings and other activities in Paraguay until next Sunday, when he will return to his country. Among other activities, a meeting is scheduled for this Friday with executives and entrepreneurs from the Paraguayan Industrial Union (UIP), one of the largest business guilds in the country.
