The President of the Republic, Santiago Peña, has experienced considerable wealth growth over a period of 10 years, as revealed by his sworn statements. In 2014, his fortune was G. 914,728,047, while in 2023 it reached G. 23,024,303,342. In an interview, he referred to not considering himself a millionaire, mentioning that he lived in a house borrowed from his brother and owned two vehicles.
In the last six years, the most notable increase took place starting in 2017. In that year, Peña decided to change political parties and resigned from the Ministry of Finance in 2017 to focus on his presidential career, which did not materialize. He then joined the Board of Banco Basa, and in 2022, it was revealed that he reportedly received a considerable amount from that institution.
Regarding his assets, from a vacant lot in 2014, the president has acquired properties in different locations and made significant constructions. His wealth includes a luxurious mansion in San Bernardino, offices, real estate, and vehicles valued in millions of guaraníes. In addition to his presidential salary, Peña holds assets in stocks and bonds for significant amounts in various companies and financial institutions.
In previous statements, Santiago Peña had emphasized that he found no pleasure in accumulating wealth and that his academic training was his main asset for thriving. He stated that he represented Paraguayans seeking progress and that he was not linked to economic groups.
