The members of the Magistrates' Impeachment Jury (JEM) have urgently requested the resignation of Deputy Orlando Arévalo after he was reported to the Prosecutor's Office for allegedly soliciting bribes to intervene in favor of prosecutors and judges identified for their poor performance. In a recent meeting, it was warned that if Arévalo does not submit his resignation, JEM sessions will be suspended until the situation is clarified.
During these meetings, it is mentioned that Arévalo may have interceded in favor of Prosecutor Katia Uemura and Judge Sady López. It is noteworthy that Arévalo served as the president of JEM in 2023 and is currently the first vice president. Although the first session of the year is scheduled for February 6, JEM members have decided not to proceed with the agenda until Arévalo's resignation is resolved.
The goal of this resignation request is to strengthen the credibility of the institution responsible for overseeing the judicial system and to ensure the integrity of Justice. Deputy Arévalo is in a compromised position after the leakage of conversations where the late Deputy Eulalio Gomes, killed by the National Police during an operation, is mentioned by Judge Osmar Legal.
The leaked conversations contain details about meetings at a residence, bank transfers, and photographs of checks for different amounts. The members of JEM have taken a firm stance on these accusations to safeguard transparency and legality in the country's judicial system.
