Paraguay reaffirms support for Panama as host of OAS Assembly

The Government of Paraguay reiterated this Wednesday its support for Panama as the host of the 56th General Assembly of the Organization of American States (OAS), which will be held in the country from June 22 to 24. In a joint communiqué, signed by the foreign ministers of Paraguay, Rubén Ramírez, and Panama, Javier Martínez-Acha, the agreements reached during the working visit of the Central American diplomat to the South American nation are reported. The text highlights that the head of Paraguayan foreign affairs confirmed to his counterpart the 'firm support' of his country for the unanimous decision made within the OAS at the end of last July, which established that Panama City will host the regular session period of the body for 2026. Likewise, the document indicates that the countries stressed the need to 'decisively advance in bilateral economic complementation with initiatives that favor trade facilitation'. In this sense, the foreign ministers highlighted that Panama is a 'strategic platform for commercial exchange' and a regional logistics and connectivity hub, whereupon they expressed their willingness to foster rapprochement between the public and private companies of both countries. On the other hand, the diplomats reiterated their 'firm and irrevocable commitment in the fight against transnational organized crime', while emphasizing the importance of 'intensifying bilateral cooperation' in this matter. Martínez-Acha will maintain a busy schedule of meetings and other activities in Paraguay until next Sunday, when he will return to his country. Among others, a meeting with executives and entrepreneurs from the Paraguayan Industrial Union (UIP), one of the largest business guilds in the country, is scheduled for this Friday.
